Civic Engagement Curriculum Guide: Championing Lived Experience and Inspiring Collective Action
These lesson plans, created by myself and Analía Muñoz Dobson, helped students at a local West Philadelphia middle school learn how to speak up for themselves and work together to make their school a better place.
The five lessons focused on teaching students how to listen to each other, share their ideas more successfully, and take action to improve things they cared about, specifically recess. By the end of the lessons, students engaged in a real-world project to improve their recess experience and to make their school more fun and fair for everyone.
One of our main goals was to show students that their voices matter and that they can make a difference in their school and community.
